Find your moon sign, free

Enter your birth date, time and place. Vela computes the sign the Moon was moving through when you were born, from the real sky, and reads it in an honest, psychology-informed voice: a lens for reflection, never a prediction. No account needed.

New to this? Placidus is a good default; it’s what most modern charts use, so yours will match what you see elsewhere.
What is a house system, honestly?

Your chart divides the sky into twelve “houses”: areas of life like home, work, and relationships. Astrologers have never fully agreed on where to draw the twelve boundaries, so there are several systems. Your planets and signs are identical in all of them; the only thing that changes is which house a planet sits in.

Placidus is the modern standard (most apps and books use it). Whole Sign is the oldest system: each house is one entire sign, which many people find clearest to learn with. Equal draws twelve even 30° rooms from your Ascendant. None of them is “wrong”; try your chart in two and notice which reading gives you more to think about. The plain-language guide →

Your reading shows your Sun, Moon and Rising together. Your Moon is the inner-weather placement below.

What your moon sign is

Your moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon occupied at the moment of your birth. If your Sun sign is the self you are consciously growing into, your Moon is the older, quieter layer underneath: your instinctive reactions, what soothes you, how you feel safe, the private weather no one else quite sees. Many people say it is the placement they recognise most as themselves.

Vela does not tell you what your Moon “makes” you do. It names the pattern and hands it back as a question, because the reflection is yours to do. That is the whole method: honest astrology as self-inquiry, not fortune-telling.

How to find your moon sign

You need three things: your date of birth, your time of birth, and your place of birth. Date and place set the sky; the time matters because the Moon moves fast, roughly twelve to thirteen degrees a day, so on some birthdays it changes sign partway through the day. With a birth time there is no ambiguity. Without one, Vela casts a noon chart and flags the rare crossover cases where the Moon changed sign that day.

Once you have your Moon, read what it means: the Moon sign, in depth, or go straight to finding and reading your Moon sign. Curious about the other two? Try the rising sign calculator or read about the big three.

Frequently asked

What is a moon sign?

Your moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon was passing through at the moment you were born. Where the Sun sign is the self you are growing into, the Moon is the inner weather underneath it: how you feel, soothe yourself, and process what happens to you. It is often the placement people recognise most quietly as themselves.

Do I need my birth time to find my moon sign?

Ideally, yes. The Moon moves quickly, roughly twelve to thirteen degrees a day, so on some days it changes sign partway through. A birth time removes any doubt. If you truly do not know it, tick “I don’t know my birth time” and Vela casts a noon chart; your moon sign will be right unless you were born on one of those crossover days, which the reading will flag.

Why is my moon sign different from my sun sign?

The Sun and Moon move at different speeds and sit in different parts of the sky, so they are usually in different signs. That gap is the point: a Leo Sun with a Cancer Moon meets the world with warmth while needing, underneath, a great deal of private tenderness. The two signs read as a conversation, not a contradiction.

Is the moon sign calculator free?

Yes. Casting your chart and reading your Moon, Sun and Rising is free and needs no account. A Vela membership adds a personalised daily reading of the sky against your own chart, but your moon sign itself costs nothing.
