What's your chart ruler?

Your chart ruler is the planet that rules your Rising sign: the quiet lead of your whole chart. Find it free, computed from the real sky and read in an honest, reflective voice: a lens, never a prediction.

Local clock time. The rising sign needs this.
Can’t find it?
New to this? Placidus is a good default; it’s what most modern charts use, so yours will match what you see elsewhere.
What is a house system, honestly?

Your chart divides the sky into twelve “houses”: areas of life like home, work, and relationships. Astrologers have never fully agreed on where to draw the twelve boundaries, so there are several systems. Your planets and signs are identical in all of them; the only thing that changes is which house a planet sits in.

Placidus is the modern standard (most apps and books use it). Whole Sign is the oldest system: each house is one entire sign, which many people find clearest to learn with. Equal draws twelve even 30° rooms from your Ascendant. None of them is “wrong”; try your chart in two and notice which reading gives you more to think about. The plain-language guide →

Still needed: your date of birth, a birth time (or tick “I don’t know”), your birth place and the 18+ confirmation.

Your reading names your Rising sign and places every planet, including your chart ruler. A birth time is needed for the Rising.

What your chart ruler is

Your chart ruler is the planet that rules your Rising sign. Because the Rising sets the whole framework of a chart (which sign sits on each house), its ruling planet is read as a kind of quiet lead: wherever that planet falls, by sign and house, colours how your entire chart expresses itself. It is a lovely thread to follow once you know your Rising.

Vela reads it as a mirror, never a verdict: where your chart ruler sits names a pattern and hands it back as a question.

Frequently asked

What is a chart ruler?

Your chart ruler is the planet that rules your Rising (Ascendant) sign. Because the Rising sign sets the whole layout of your chart, its ruler is treated as a quiet lead planet: where it sits, by sign and house, colours how your whole chart expresses itself. A Libra Rising, for example, has Venus as its chart ruler.

How do I find my chart ruler?

First find your Rising sign, which needs your exact birth time. Cast your chart above and Vela gives you your Rising and the placement of its ruling planet. Or use the table below: find your Rising sign and read across to the planet that rules it.

Do I need my birth time for my chart ruler?

Yes. The chart ruler depends on your Rising sign, and the Rising changes roughly every two hours, so it can only be placed honestly with a birth time. Without one, Vela will not guess your Rising, and so cannot name your chart ruler.

Is the chart ruler calculator free?

Yes. Casting your chart and finding your chart ruler is free and needs no account. A Vela membership adds a personalised daily reading of the sky against your own chart, but your chart ruler costs nothing.
