Rising sign calculator

Find your rising sign, free

Enter your birth date, your exact time and your place. Vela computes the sign that was rising over the horizon when you were born, from the real sky, and reads it honestly: a lens for reflection, never a prediction. No account needed.

Local clock time. The rising sign needs this.
Can’t find it?
New to this? Placidus is a good default; it’s what most modern charts use, so yours will match what you see elsewhere.
What is a house system, honestly?

Your chart divides the sky into twelve “houses”: areas of life like home, work, and relationships. Astrologers have never fully agreed on where to draw the twelve boundaries, so there are several systems. Your planets and signs are identical in all of them; the only thing that changes is which house a planet sits in.

Placidus is the modern standard (most apps and books use it). Whole Sign is the oldest system: each house is one entire sign, which many people find clearest to learn with. Equal draws twelve even 30° rooms from your Ascendant. None of them is “wrong”; try your chart in two and notice which reading gives you more to think about. The plain-language guide →

Your Rising (Ascendant) sits at the top of the wheel, at the start of the first house. An exact birth time is what makes it trustworthy.

What your rising sign is

Your rising sign, or Ascendant, is the sign that was climbing over the eastern horizon at the exact time and place you were born. It is the doorway of the chart: the way you meet the world, the first impression you make, the instinctive posture you take towards anything new. It is the shorthand for why two people who share a Sun sign can feel like completely different weather in a room.

Vela never tells you what your Rising “makes” you. It names the manner and hands it back as a question, because the reflection is yours. Honest astrology, not fortune-telling: read the promise if you want the method in full.

Why the exact birth time matters

The Ascendant is the fastest-moving point in your chart. The entire zodiac rises across a day, so the rising sign advances about one degree every four minutes and changes sign roughly every two hours. That is why a rough guess will not do: an hour’s error can give you the wrong sign. Your birth certificate is the gold standard. If you genuinely do not know your time, Vela will not fake a Rising; you will still get an honest reading of your Sun, Moon and planets by sign.

Once you have your Ascendant, read what it means in the rising sign, in depth, see how it sits with the rest in the big three, or find your inner-weather placement with the moon sign calculator.

Frequently asked

What is a rising sign?

Your rising sign, or Ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was climbing over the eastern horizon at the exact moment and place of your birth. It is the “front door” of your chart: the manner you meet the world in, the first impression you make, the instinctive way you approach anything new. It is why two people with the same Sun sign can feel so different in the room.

Why do I need my exact birth time?

Because the Ascendant moves fast. The whole zodiac rises over the horizon in a day, so the rising sign advances about one degree every four minutes and changes sign roughly every two hours. A guess of even an hour or two can hand you the wrong sign entirely. Your birth certificate is the best source; a parent’s memory is a starting point worth confirming.

What if I don’t know my birth time?

Then the rising sign cannot be computed honestly, and Vela will not invent one. Tick “I don’t know my birth time” and you will still get a true reading of your Sun, Moon and planets by sign; the Rising and the houses stay blank rather than showing a placement we cannot stand behind. If you later find your time, cast again.

Rising sign vs sun sign: what is the difference?

Your Sun sign is your core, the self you are growing into over a lifetime. Your rising sign is the doorway to it: the style you lead with and the lens others meet you through first. The Sun is who you are becoming; the Rising is how you arrive. Reading them together is far more revealing than either alone.

Is the rising sign calculator free?

Yes, and no account is needed. Your Ascendant, Sun and Moon all come free. A membership adds a personalised daily reading of the moving sky against your own chart, but finding your rising sign costs nothing.
