How to find your Moon sign (and why birth time matters)
Your Moon sign is often where the truer, quieter story lives — and it is one of the easiest placements to get wrong in a rough calculation, because it depends on your birth time. Here is how to find yours properly.
The steps
- Find your birth time. Check your birth certificate, baby book, or ask a parent. Even an approximate time helps; the Moon changes sign only every couple of days.
- Open the free calculator. Head to the Vela calculator and choose your birth date.
- Enter your date, time, and place. Add your birth time and the city you were born in, so the position is calculated for the right moment and location.
- Read your Moon placement. Your Moon sign appears alongside your Sun and Rising, each with a short reflective reading.
What if I don't know my exact birth time?
Don't worry too much. Because the Moon stays in a sign for roughly two and a half days, an approximate time is usually enough to get the sign right — it is the Rising sign that is most sensitive to the exact minute. If you are close to a sign boundary, the calculator will show it, and you can try a couple of nearby times.
