How to find your Moon sign (and why birth time matters)

Your Moon sign is often where the truer, quieter story lives — and it is one of the easiest placements to get wrong in a rough calculation, because it depends on your birth time. Here is how to find yours properly.

The steps

  1. Find your birth time. Check your birth certificate, baby book, or ask a parent. Even an approximate time helps; the Moon changes sign only every couple of days.
  2. Open the free calculator. Head to the Vela calculator and choose your birth date.
  3. Enter your date, time, and place. Add your birth time and the city you were born in, so the position is calculated for the right moment and location.
  4. Read your Moon placement. Your Moon sign appears alongside your Sun and Rising, each with a short reflective reading.

What if I don't know my exact birth time?

Don't worry too much. Because the Moon stays in a sign for roughly two and a half days, an approximate time is usually enough to get the sign right — it is the Rising sign that is most sensitive to the exact minute. If you are close to a sign boundary, the calculator will show it, and you can try a couple of nearby times.
