Vela
/ˈviːlə/
noun · astronomy
1.a southern constellation (the Sails), lying partly in the Milky Way between Carina and Pyxis, and originally part of Argo.
To the old Greek sky-watchers these stars were the sails of the Argo — the ship that carried Jason and his crew over uncharted water in search of the Golden Fleece. When the voyage was done the vessel was set among the stars, its canvas forever filled by a wind no one can feel; and those who steered by it learned a quiet thing — that even the darkest sea can be crossed by anyone who knows how to read the sky.
